Description:

The Abominable Snowman (1957) aka The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas, directed by Val Guest, extended UK cut, Shout! Factory remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original theatrical stereo and English subtitles.

IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050095/

Video encoded in two-pass 9 000 kbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image.

Note : Some early and somewhat atypical Hammer horror here, a very high production value affair with lots of majestic mountain landscapes and a fairly convincing Tibetan temple (the less said about casting a white dude as the Lama, the better, though). It's also not a straight monster movie, but more of a Moby Dickian affair with an obsessed hunter whose single-minded quest to capture a Yeti brings misfortune to all those around him. Oh, and the Yeti are telepathic, apparently. It's not bad, with very solid performances by Peter Cushing and Forrest Tucker, and it's written by the legendary Nigel Kneale, who also makes an appearance on one of the commentary tracks.

Dr. Rollason and his wife are guests at a temple in Tibet while on a botanical expedition. A second group of explorers arrive at the temple, lead by Tom Friend, who's determined to capture a Yeti. He's accompanied by a photographer, a trapper, and a Sherpa who once saw one. Rollason, out of scientific curiosity, joins Friend's expedition, against his wife's wishes, but soon finds that Friend is willing to go to extremes to achieve his goal, including putting the other members of the expedition at mortal risk.

This Shout! Factory remaster looks quite good, nice and sharp with lots of detail, although note that about five minutes of this restored version has been sourced from standard definition material, since the original film elements no longer exist. It's really not too distracting. Both commentary tracks are good, but the one with Guest and Kneale is really a gem.
