Note : A bunch of "based on a real story" hokum that made a lot of money, this film was later reappraised into a forerunner of the contemporary haunted house genre, but it's also very influenced by the religious horror wave of the 70s. It's kind of dreary, both visually and tonally, and there isn't a lot really going on, 80% of the film is just people reacting to things we don't see or don't know the implications of, but it gets better when it allows itself to be weird (pig monster in the window, well full of blood under the stairs). All in all, some creepy moments, some decent acting from James Brolin, 70s genre film MVP Margot Kidder, and Rod Steiger, but ultimately fodder for the rising wave of born-again American Christianity of the time, which desperately wanted to belive that demons were real, physical things.
The Lutz family moves into a house on Long Island where Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed his whole family of six a year earlier. Kathy, the mother, has a Catholic priest come in to bless the home, but he's swarmed by flies in an upstairs room and hears a voice ordering him out. The next day, Kathy's aunt, a nun, visits, but becomes violently ill and leaves in a panic. Over the next few days, Kathy's husband George, starts becoming violent and abusive, obsessively chopping wood and keeping the fireplace burning. George consistently wakes up at 3:15 AM, the time of the murders, while Kathy has nightmares. Strange occurences and sightings in and around the house continue disturbing the family, one of the children has an invisible friend who might be a pig monster, and of course it all culminates in murderous desire.
This transfer is pretty decent, though a bit desaturated and dull, but it was very grainy, so I've degrained a bit. Otherwise, the cinematography is nothing to write home about, but it looks fine. 5.1 remaster sounds good, stereo track is fine, commentary track is by some huckster "PhD in Parapsychology", which is definitely not my bag.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “ hevk demon” for more inhuman spirits from the nether realms, or possibly from under the stairs, “ hevk religious horror” for more priests, demons, and the occasional angel, or “ hevk 70s” for more from the decade when demons got, like, really popular.
