There are at least two dozen compilations of music by the Band, and that doesn’t include the various box sets. While some are better than others, all of them have shortcomings. The reason is quite simple: this is a group whose music is not easily summarized by a single-disc collection. Opus Collection, issued by Starbucks, is in the top two or three comps out there; the other two are Greatest Hits and The Very Best of the Band. Opus Collection contains 16 tracks and most of the major stuff: “Up on Cripple Creek,” “The Weight,” “Ophelia,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “Tears of Rage,” etc. The curious exclusions are “Chest Fever” and “Acadian Driftwood.” If you can live without those two cuts, for diversity, representation, and sequencing, this is very solid.
