Note : When you're into 70s thrillers like I am, it's hard to avoid this one, and since this new 4k remaster just came out, it seemed like a good oppportunity to get into some Coppola. Something of a thematic sequel to Blow-Up, but set in a grittier, much more paranoid decade and location, it's a more straight noir, focused on one very private man whose job it is to pry into the lives of other. Gene Hackman's near-flawless performance anchors it, but it also has a tight script, some nice (if quite grainy) cinematography, interesting editing and sound design by Walter Murch, who also gets his own commentary track, and great supporting performances from everyone from John Cazale and Allen Garfield to Harrison Ford and Robert Duvall. A classic for a reason.
Harry Caul is an intensely introverted, private man who works as a surveillance expert. He's hired by a client who calls himself "The Director", to eavesdrop on a couple in San Francisco's Union Square. Despite problems with the recordings, Caul manages to clean them up, but the conversation's meaning is not clear. When he notices the phrase "He'd kill us if he got the chance", he grows to suspect his client is going to kill his wife and her lover, and grows increasingly paranoid. An attempt at delivering the tapes to the client fails, and after a convention, he hosts several people at his workshop, ends up sleeping with a woman, and wakes up to find his recordings stolen. His client's assistant informs him that they have the tapes, and want the photographs, and for Caul to collect his fee, the same day. Caul's paranoia grows as he's trying to figure out what's really going on, and forces unknown are increasingly trying to discourage him.
This is a pretty good 4k remaster of a film that seems to have been fairly grainy and soft to begin with. Color and contrast are very nice, grain is prevalent, but not distracting, and the image is not particularly sharp, but feels period-appropriate. 5.1 remaster is nice and clear, the original stereo track is also quite good, and both commentary tracks are well worth checking out.
