A persiflage on the protest movements of the 60s. Its hero is the bold and sex-obsessed tom-cat Fritz the Cat, as created by the legendary underground artist Robert Crumb. Quitting university Fritz the Cat wanders through the hash, Black Panther and Hell's Angels scenes to find to himself.
The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat [1974]

Fritz the Cat may have lost one of his lives in the comics, but in his new movie, he has eight more lives left to go! While his wife screams at him, Fritz lights up a joint and reminiscences about what could have been.
Extra: ADULT Animation: An Interview with Ralph Bakshi. Double-bill of the classic counterculture animated films, based on the promiscuous, dope-smoking feline created by Robert Crumb. In 'Fritz the Cat' (1972), Fritz takes a trip to New York, where he hangs out with Black Panthers, Hell's Angels, some lady cats, and indulges in the psychedelic drug scene. In the sequel, 'Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat' (1974), Fritz takes a drug-induced trip and dreams about his other eight lives, where he is alternately an astronaut, Hitler's psychiatrist, and the pupil of an Indian guru living in the sewers of New York.
Based on the comic strip of the same name by Robert Crumb, the film was the first animated feature film to receive an X rating in the United States. It focuses on Fritz (voiced by Skip Hinnant), an anthropomorphic feline in mid-1960s New York City who explores the ideals of hedonism and sociopolitical consciousness. The film is a satire focusing on American college life of the era, race relations, the free love movement, and left- and right-wing politics. Fritz the Cat is the most successful independent animated feature of all time, grossing over $90 million worldwide.
The film had a troubled production history and controversial release. Crumb is known to have had disagreements with the filmmakers over the film's political content. Fritz the Cat was controversial for its rating and content, which many viewers at the time found to be offensive. Its success led to a slew of other X-rated animated films, and a sequel, The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat, was made without Crumb's or Bakshi's involvement.
