Note : Often called the very first giallo, this stylish film by Mario Bava has a few things that are unique, even considering that most other gialli are in color. While many of the typical giallo flourishes are on full display, such as a female protagonist in constant near hysterics who no one believes, red herrings galore, extremely dramatic lighting, and so on, this also has a strong comedic streak, both intentional and unintentional. The whole "Rome is everyone's dream destination" thing immediately followed by our heroine getting involved with drug smugglers, witnessing a murder, and being institutionalized against her will, all in her first 24 hours in town seems like a knowing joke, but the Extremely Melodramatic Male Voiceover Narration, the way everyone infantilizes the protagonist to a ridiculous degree, and how she in the end thinks that she might have maybe dreamed everything because she unknowingly smoked one "marijuana cigarette" a week ago are also pretty funny. Letícia Román is gorgeous and funny, John Saxon is studly and shows off his Italian, the supporting cast is great, if you like everything turned up to 11. Scenery was certainly chewed in Rome.
This is a completely bare-bones remaster, not really cleaned up at all, with lots of noticeable dirt and dust. However, it doesn't really diminish the stark chiaroscuro cinematography, it's simply gorgeous. The commentary track with Tim Lucas is very informative too.
