Note : Everyone knows about the Roger Corman/Vincent Price Poe adaptations, but I feel like they're not as often seen as they should. And they really should be seen, because they're genuinely good films in all ways, good stories, good acting, good cinematography, and all of that's on display in this one, a combination of two Poe stories, "The Masque of the Red Death", about Prince Prospero arranging a great party in his castle while a plague ravages the countryside, and "Hop-Frog", about a dwarf jester (named "Hop-Toad" here) taking gruesome revenge on a noble who insults and hurts his beloved. Vincent Price is at his leering, sinister best as the volatile, Satan-worshiping Prospero, and the supporting cast is great too. The visuals are also top-notch, with the seven colored rooms from the original story rendered in vibrant Technicolor, courtesy of cinematographer Nicolas Roeg (who later directed Don't Look Now and The Witches, amongst a lot of other things).
This 4k restoration (by The AMPAS Film Archive and The Film Foundation) looks great, color, saturation, contrast all perfect, very clean, with nice grain, and the sound is also clean and clear. The commentary track is informative and entertaining. In general, probably the definitive version of this film.
