Nel 1767, nella regione sudamericana del Paranà governata da spagnoli e portoghesi, padre Gabriel, un missionario gesuita, decide di risalire le cascate del fiume Iguazu per prendere contatto con una tribù di indios che vive nella foresta. Si unisce a lui Mendoza, un cacciatore di schiavi che ha ucciso per gelosia il proprio fratello e ora è in cerca di riscatto. Il loro obiettivo, condiviso dai superiori, è quello di tentare di creare un sistema comunitario dove per gli indigeni sia possibile vivere senza essere sfruttati...
