Note : Boris Karloff and James Whale reunited after the success of Frankenstein to make this early horror comedy, in my opinion one of the first successful ones. It wasn't very commercially successful at release, and was long thought lost, but was rediscovered and restored by the Eastman House after gaining somewhat legendary status. Although Karloff's role is small, and a lot of the actors were lesser-known British theater types, it's a solid cast, and most of the actors would work with Whale again, including Ernest Thesiger, who played Dr. Pretorius in Bride of Frankenstein.
The tropes come fast and heavy as a group of strangers seek refuge from a storm in an old country house full of eccentric characters. Lights go out, characters plot and flirt, a dangerous pyromaniac is on the loose, and the monstrous butler might be up to no good. It's all resolved in good cheer, with most characters still alive, and freshly kindled romance to liven everyone up.
This is a quite good remaster, reasonably sharp, good contrast with fairly prominent grain, and a nice clean mono track. Both commentary tracks are worth your time.
