Note : Wes Craven was constantly innovating, and even between his most well known films, he was doing stuff that feels fresh and original today. In this case, it's The People Under the Stairs, perhaps his most political movie, dealing with racism, class relations, gentrification and capitalism in a brisk, pitch-black funny satirical horror movie. It also sports a great cast, from Ving Rhames in a smaller role, to Everett McGill and Wendy Robie as the villains, who were cast after Craven saw them play a couple in Twin Peaks.
The story deals with Fool, a young boy who is convinced to come along on a break and enter mission at the house of the local slum lords, who are also the landlords threatening his family with eviction, and who are rumored to have a fortune in gold coins in their weird old house. However, the slumlords are far more twisted and dangerous than expected, and Fool ends up fighting for his life while also encountering the villains' daughter, as well as several of their rejected "children" who are locked up in the basement or roaming loose inside the walls of the huge house. There's also an extremely mean dog, and a memorable sequence with a gimp suit and a shotgun.
This Shout! Factory remaster looks quite good, good contrast and color, decently managed grain, pretty sharp and clear. The 5.1 remaster sounds as it should, and both the commentary tracks are funny and interesting.
