Note : Hammer's two major franchises were Frankenstein and Dracula, and it's about time we got into these long-running series beyond their first films. In this very direct sequel to 1957's The Curse of Frankenstein, Terence Fisher re-teams with Peter Cushing and screenwriter Jimmy Sangster to continue the story. It's a bit weirdly paced, the central conflict is somewhat contrived, and it can't avoid the old cliché of bodily deformation signifying internal evil, but Peter Cushing is great as a both incredibly arrogant and profoundly lonely genius, and it's probably the second-best Frankenstein sequel in film history after Bride of Frankenstein.

Baron Frankenstein escapes his execution after the events of the first film, and takes up residence in Carlsbrück under the somewhat ill-considered alias Dr. Victor Stein. He becomes a very popular and successful physician, all the while antagonizing the local medical council and also helping the poor at a local hospital. However, he's continued his experiments in secret, using body parts amputated from the poor. A young local doctor, Hans Kleve, suspects Frankenstein's real identity, but only wishes to become his pupil. Together, they work to transplant Frankenstein's crippled assistant Karl's brain into a newly constructed body, since Frankenstein has concluded a living brain, recently harvested, has to be used for the procedure to be successful. Karl indeed wakes up in a new body, but the arrival of a well-meaning young woman at the hospital, along with Karl's reticence to become an object of study for the medical profession lead to things getting out of hand once again.

This Indicator remaster isn't great, with a not very attractive grain, somewhat faded color, and a lack of fine detail, but it works well enough. The original mono sounds fine, and both commentary tracks are worthwile.
