Note : I guess it was inevitable we'd get around to Albert Pyun's oeuvre sooner or later, and this is his first and by many accounts best, a Conan knock-off which had a lukewarm reception at the box office, but has earned something of a cult following. There are certainly a lot of inventive weirdness here, from a wall of suffering faces to the famously awkward-looking three-bladed spring-loaded sword, a lot of tits, and a surfeit of early-80s lens glare, which makes it hard to see the previously mentioned things. Still, worth watching, Lee Horsley, Kathleen Beller, Richard Lynch, and Richard Moll are clearly having fun, and it's all pretty entertaining.
King Titus Cromwell and his assistants land on the cheerily named "Tomb Island" and proceed to resurrect infamous sorcerer Xusia, who then helps Cromwell to defeat his rival King Richard. Cromwell betrays and stabs Xusia on the eve of the final battle against Richard, who just has time to give his son Talon the dumbest sword ever before being killed. Many years later, Talon wants his revenge, and teams up with Mikah, the son of Richard's closest advisor, but Xusia is also still alive and has designs of his own.
This is a decent enough 4k remaster, although the source material is soft and full of glare, so it's a bit limited how much detail we can get. Color and contrast is nice, though. 5.1 sounds good, as does the original stereo track, and the two commentary tracks are interesting, giving us a chance to compare and contrast young and old Albert Pyun.
