Note : As the 70s went on, the "scary irrational group of dangerous young people" trope in American exploitation film evolved from hippie cults to urban street gangs, but they were almost always cast as the bad guys, which was why Walter Hill's take was so revolutionary. Based on a novel (in turn based on Xenophon's Anabasis), it depicts an epic conflict between street gangs as a timeless struggle of dominance and manhood, and mixes it with constantly cool imagery and inventive (if a little goofy) gang gimmicks. One of the all-time great action thrillers, and the capstone of the 70s street gang film, nicely subverting the fascist vigilante genre dominance, and proving so controversial that the studio stopped advertising it.
Small gang The Warriors from Coney Island head to the Bronx for a meeting of all of New York City's gangs, called by Cyrus, the leader of the Gramercy Riffs. Cyrus has a vision of uniting all the gangs into one organization which will effectively control the city, since they outnumber the NYPD three to one. However, Luther, leader of a gang called the Rogues, shoots Cyrus, and blames The Warriors, leading to the death of their leader Cleon, and sending the rest of The Warriors on the run through night time NYC to get back home, beset on all sides by enraged rival gangs, as well as the police.
This is a very good 4k remaster, perhaps a bit grainy and clipped in the blacks, but the contrast and color saturation is excellent, and it nicely fits the style of the film. 7.1 remaster also sounds great, original mono is there if you want the more authentic retro experience, and both commentary tracks, even though they're by the same critic, are worth listening to.
