Thomas Piketty - Capital, Ideology, and Wealth Inequality (13 books)

Torrent: Thomas Piketty - Capital, Ideology, and Wealth Inequality (13 books)
Description:

* Thomas Piketty - Capital, Ideology, and Wealth Inequality (13 books)

THOMAS PIKETTY
(b. 1971) is a French economist whose work focuses on public economics, in particular income and wealth inequality.  He is currently Professor of Economics at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales and the Paris School of Economics.

Piketty has done major historical and theoretical work on the interplay between economic development, the distribution of income and wealth, and political conflict.  These works have led to emphasize the role of political, social and fiscal institutions in the historical evolution of income and wealth distribution.

He gained international celebrity with the English publication of CAPITAL IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY (2013).  His novel use of tax records enabled him to gather data on the very top economic elite, who had previously been understudied, and to ascertain their rate of accumulation of wealth and how this compared to the rest of society and economy.  The book's central thesis is that inequality is not an accident but rather a feature of capitalism that can be reversed only through state intervention.  Piketty thus argues that unless capitalism is reformed, the very democratic order will be threatened.  To address this problem, he proposes redistribution through a progressive global tax on wealth.

CAPITAL AND IDEOLOGY (2019), a successor to Capital in the Twenty-First Century, focuses on income and wealth inequality in various societies in history.  Piketty argues that various ideologies arise to defend inequality, and wealth is diverted to sustain these ideologies.  The book contains significant material dedicated to prescriptions for reducing inequality of wealth and income, such as a wealth tax, and to sustaining ideological support for such fiscal and economic policies.

His most recent work, A BRIEF HISTORY OF EQUALITY (2022), is a much shorter book about wealth redistribution intended for a general audience, in which he traces a history of equality from 1780 to 2020.
