Quote:
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1990, the group's line-up has included drummer Danny Carey, guitarist Adam Jones, and vocalist Maynard James Keenan. Since 1995, Justin Chancellor has been the band's bassist, replacing their original bassist Paul D'Amour. Tool has won three Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.
The band emerged with a heavy metal sound on their first studio album, Undertow (1993), and later became a dominant act in the alternative metal movement with the release of their second effort, Ænima, in 1996. Their efforts to unify musical experimentation, visual arts, and a message of personal evolution continued with Lateralus (2001) and the most recent album, 10,000 Days (2006), gaining the band critical acclaim and commercial success around the world.
Due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship and the band members' insistence on privacy.
72826 1991
72826 is a demo tape by American rock band Tool. It was released in 1991 in very limited quantities, probably between 100 and 200 exist. It is also referred to by the name Toolshed, or Tool. There has been some speculations made about the name, some noting that '72826' spells 'Satan' on a telephone keypad. 72826 was recorded in Maynard James Keenan's rehearsal room, on a 4-track recorder. It features early versions of songs that reappeared in their later releases: "Cold and Ugly", "Hush", "Part of Me" and "Jerk-Off" on Opiate, and "Crawl Away" and "Sober" on Undertow.
Tracks:
1. "Cold and Ugly" 2. "Hush" 3. "Part of Me" 4. "Crawl Away" 5. "Sober" 6. "Jerk-Off"
Opiate 1992
Opiate is an EP by American rock band Tool. It was produced and engineered by Sylvia Massy and former Minor Threat bassist Steve Hansgen. Released in 1992, it was the result of some two years of the band playing together after their formation in 1990. "Opiate" preceded Tool's first full-length album, Undertow, by a year. It is named after a quote by Karl Marx: "Religion [...] is the opium of the masses".[4] The EP was certified platinum by the RIAA on April 1, 2005. As of July 7, 2010, Opiate has sold 1,155,000 Copies in the US.
Opiate features six tracks, two of which are live recordings. Some versions of the EP feature a hidden seventh track titled "The Gaping Lotus Experience". The song is hidden at the end of the last track of the EP, "Opiate", and begins approximately 6 minutes and 6 seconds into the song. Vinyl copies of the EP featured a double groove on the second side; one which contained "Cold and Ugly", with the second containing "The Gaping Lotus Experience" and a small period of silence. Both grooves led into "Jerk-Off". The song "Sweat" was featured on the Escape From L.A. soundtrack.[5]
"Cold and Ugly" and "Jerk-Off" were recorded live at the Jello Loft on New Year's Eve 1991, the band's second public show.[citation needed] These two tracks, along with "Hush" and "Part of Me", were featured on the band's debut demo recording, 72826. "Jerk-Off" and "Cold and Ugly" have never been recorded in the studio except for in this demo. All four songs were re-recorded for this EP.
In the original CD inserts of the EP, there is a collage of tiny photos of the band members as children, and also includes a picture of someone engaging in necrophilia with a well-decomposed cadaver. In reality, it is a friend of the band joking around in prop maker Stan Winston's studio
Tracks:
1. "Sweat" 2. "Hush" 3. "Part of Me" 4. "Cold and Ugly" (live)
5. "Jerk-Off" (live)

It was released at a time when grunge was at the height of its popularity, and pop punk was slowly beginning to gather mainstream attention.[2] Allmusic saw the album's success in the "striking, haunting visuals that complemented the album's nihilistic yet wistful mood."[2] It was eventually certified double platinum by the RIAA on May 14, 2001.[5] As of July 7, 2010, Undertow has sold 2,910,000 copies in the US.
