Il film narra le dolorose peripezie di una donna vietnamita dal 1965 al 1975 durante la Guerra del Vietnam, del matrimonio con un sergente americano, dell'abbandono del villaggio natio e del successivo inserimento nella vita californiana, concludendosi col suicidio del marito che, invece, non riesce a uscire da un profondo disadattamento esistenziale.
