Traffic
John Barleycorn Must Die
1970 (UA) | jazz-rock, prog, folk

Traffic is an atypical British group, led by multi-instrumentalism and the supernatural voice of Steve Winwood
and from the elegant percussionism of Jim Capaldi. Supporting the two undisputed leaders of the band are Dave Mason on guitar and Chris Wood
on electric sax and flute; in turns and flashes Ric Grech on bass and Jim Gordon as second drummer also appeared.

Steve Winwood at the time, and even before the Traffic era, had played an important role through his past with the Spencer Davis Group
and more precisely in that overwhelming composition of taste and rhythm that is "Gimme Some Lovin '". Through Traffic, not yet twenty,
Winwood completed his personal project. Jim Capaldi was the company's partner, older, but highly charismatic, even if less daring
of the young Winwood, he was the reflective mind with an excellent compositional and creative vein; usually the drummer is the "least" musical essence
of the group, Capaldi was the typical exception.

Traffic throughout their career have touched various musical currents, they approached the then nascent progressive rock, they
injected into their background jazz nuances, in other cases soul sounds; r & b has almost always been present, and they have never lost sight of it
the matrix with which all the members of the group had formed musically: the beat. Their atypicality lies in the fact that precisely for
their variegated way of understanding and making music, have hardly been enclosed in a predefined genre, have touched multiple ports
without ever setting sail at any port; they have always limited themselves to barely notching the superficial cortex of a genus without ever going down
depth, and perhaps in this lies their greatness. If they were born today, in the new millennium, perhaps theirs would have been labeled as
"global music" (to use trendy terminology) or, better still, World music.
