Tubby Hayes Late Spot At Scott's Recorded May 17 and 18 1962
Label : Fontana / Redial
Format : [email protected]
Recorded live in May 1962 at Ronnie Scott's original Gerrard Street club, this album and its partner, Down In The Village, vividly convey the feel of the period, as well as capturing Tubby Hayes at his mature best. Since is death in 1973, Hayes has become an almost legendary figure in British jazz, a stupendously gifted artist who burned himself out before fulfilling his immense promise. As a tenor saxophonist Hayes was unrivalled, with a blindingly fast imagination and technique to match. He could also pick up other instruments with daunting ease. This set contains a delicate version of "Angel Eyes" on which he plays vibraphone. This was his regular band at the time, featuring the great Scottish trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar and a rhythm section of Gordon Beck (piano), Freddie Logan (bass) and Allan Ganley (drums). Deuchar and Beck, in particular, surpass themselves here.
