The Songs of Anarchy, Vol. 3 features vocal performances from Chris Goss (Masters of Reality), singer-songwriter Noah Gundersen and cast members Maggie Siff and Katey Sagal. Eleven of the soundtrack’s 13 recordings feature the show’s house band, the Forest Rangers.
Vol. 3. is long on covers, as Goss fronts the Forest Rangers for a version of the Mississippi Sheiks’ 1930s folk-blues number “Sitting on Top of the World,” which was hand-selected by Sutter. Sagal is also joined by the band for her version of Jackson Browne’s “For a Dancer,” while Billy Valentine delivers Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.”
Meanwhile, Siff delivers one of the disc’s other originals, the stripped down “Lullaby for a Soldier (Arms of the Angels),” which was written by Dillon O’Brian. Leonard Cohen’s “Come Healing,” which was heard in its entirety during this season’s premiere episode and was included on Cohen’s 2012 album Old Ideas, is another high point.
Alongside Thiele, the Forest Rangers include the recent Eric Clapton sideman Leisz (guitar/banjo), session musicians John Philip Shenale (keyboards) and Lyle Workman (guitar), Davey Faragher of Elvis Costello’s Imposters (bass), one-time Wire Train drummer Brian Macleod (drums) and Velvet Revolver guitarist Dave Kushner.
