English subtitles OCRed, proofed and corrected.
Note : Another one of the great horror classics, Dreyer's Vampyr is very light on story, but heavy on the vibes. A nightmarish, etheral looking story that floats from location to location as lightly as its sometimes semi-transparent protagonist, it doesn't explain much, but you get the general gist, and its dreamlike atmosphere feels like you've stumbled across a weird mystery in a rural small town, much like the protagonist himself. It's not a silent film, but it almost feels like one, with very little dialog, scene setting done through title cards, and only ambient soundscapes that don't necessarily have a direct connection to the images.
Allan Gray, a young man who's a student of the occult arrives at a small French village where he settles into a hotel for the night. During the night, he's awoken by an elderly man who enters his room, leaves a package marked "To be opened in the event of my death", and leaves. Gray follows shadowy figures who lead him to a castle, where he finds the same elderly man, who's promptly murdered. The old man's two daughters also live there, one is very ill, and when Gray opens the package, he finds a book on vampire lore, and discovers that the village is under the sway of a female vampire, who is also the reason for the older daughter's illness. During an out of body experience, he finds the vampire's grave and also has to deal with her accomplice.
As usual, a very conservative restoration, but quite watchable, and the restored sound is good too. The two commentary tracks are also informative, and I especially recommend the one by Guillermo del Toro, who's apparently a superfan.
