Note : This nasty little Mexican movie about a very dysfunctional family who have to deal with the sudden death of their patriarch and figure out how to continue their chosen lifestyle of ritualistic murder and cannibalism is thoroughly unpleasant, from the grotty, grimy interiors and the tobacco-stained ugly cinematography to the naked moralism, homophobia and violence of the main characters, seeing themselves as morally superior even as they indiscriminately murder and kill people. It's enough to make you want to take a shower afterwards.
While this film is sometimes called a "sequel" to Del Toro's 1993 Cronos, that's really not a meaningful label. The two films share a minor character, a greaser coroner played by Daniel Giménez Cacho, who finds himself in a similar situation in both films, but they really have little in common. This film is much more mean-spirited and nasty than anything Del Toro would ever make, and it's wholly lacking in the childhood innocence department.
This Blu-Ray looks fine, if fine is just to reflect the rather unattractive cinematography. It's not that the cinematography is bad, it seems quite purposefully designed, but the drab brown tint, the clipped blacks and lack of light, and the slightly overprocessed lack of grain means I can't really call it "good" as such. Much like the film, it is what it is. Sound is fine too. No extras, sadly.
