Note : David Lynch's controversial 1990 Palme d'Or winner got very mixed reviews when it first came out, but I think it holds up really well. It's just hard to pigeonhole, being a romance black comedy crime thriller with surrealist asides and frequent references to the Wizard of Oz, but it all somehow works.
Nicholas Cage's notorious crazy intensity is exactly right for the character, Laura Dern is by turns sexy, wise, and innocent, and Willem Dafoe's Bobby Peru is one of the most memorable, repulsive and compelling villains in movie history, along with unwitting mastermind Marietta, played by Diane Ladd. The supporting cast is also fantastic, with Lynch regulars like Harry Dean Stanton and Isabella Rosselini, and oddball minor roles for character actors like David Patrick Kelly, Crispin Glover, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and many more. It just all comes together into a one of a kind thing that's not to be missed.
This is a very good-looking movie, if not a fantastic remaster (it could be cleaner), and there aren't really any extras (Lynch doesn't do commentary tracks, and doesn't even like to talk about his films), but it's more than good enough, and the movie is what you should be here for anyway.
